Southland Cheese Rolls

Both the filling and the prepared uncooked rolls can be made in advance. Keep the filled uncooked rolls in the freezer ready to pull out, defrost and bake off when you need them.

Cook time:
30 mins + cooling
Makes:
35
  • 370 ml tin evaporated milk
  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 small onion, grated (about ¼ cup)
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • ½ tsp fine white pepper
  • 500g edam cheese, grated
  • 32g packet onion soup powder
  • about 35 slices white or light grain sandwich bread (about 1½ loaves)
  • softened butter or mayonnaise, to spread

Place evaporated milk in a pot with cream, onion, mustard powder and pepper. Heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat, add cheese and soup powder and stir until cheese has melted and sauce has thickened. Allow to cool before using (it will thicken further as it cools). This mixture can be made in advance and stored in a container in the fridge for up to a week.

To cook rolls, preheat oven to 180˚C and line 2 oven trays with baking paper.

Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter or mayonnaise and remove crusts if desired (traditionally they aren’t removed). Spread 2 tbsp of the cooled cheese mixture on the unbuttered side of each slice, and then roll up firmly, placing joined-edge down on the prepared tray. Bake until crisp and golden (15-20 minutes). Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Was hoping to add a photo if my rolls ready for the freezer. We're going to a BBQ on the weekend so thought I'd take some to show these country folk up here in rural Whangarei. I only add one table spoon of mixture and can easily get 3 loaves out of it. The mixture's still warm when I do them. They are a special treat, great with hearty soup. They freeze well.

Was looking forward to making these as we lived in Invercargill for a few years. Followed recipe closely but ended up with most of the filling on the oven tray. I put less than the 2 tablespoons in each roll and still have a lot left over but it still oozed out in the oven. What did I do wrong. However they were delicious and I want to get it right next time.

I made these for a work potluck and they were devoured within minutes, everyone was asking for the recipe. These cheese rolls are so easy to make and incredibly delicious. I will definitely make these again.

My Mum use to make these rolls when we were kids. I was trying to think of a tasty snack for our kids and then remembered how delicious these roll were. I made them and our family love them, so does everyone else who has tried them. We live in Perth now and I have emailed this recipe to so many of our Aussie friends! Love good old kiwi food!

Doh! I read evaporated milk as reduced cream - I think I have dip on the brain ;o)

Hi there, we only have 250ml tins of reduced cream - can I just top up with ordinary cream? Or do I need to get an extra tin?

OMG these are so delicious, and make so many. Probably the tastiest thing I’ve ever had, if you love cheese these are a must!! We experimented a little with a couple, adding smoked salmon or bacon and they were amazing.
