When cook and food writer Annabel Langbein was growing up in Wellington, dinner meant enjoying the best of the season’s vegetables from her officeworker father’s backyard vege patch and cooking was taught at school.
Now, her own, lush Auckland oasis, plus the nine hectares she and husband Ted Hewetson are cultivating as a garden and orchard in Otago, sustain the couple and their children, Sean, 15, and Rose, 13. Food from cans and packets Ú eating barcodes, as Langbein calls it Ú is not on the menu.

Leeks grown in a warm climate are never going to have the sweetness of leeks grown in winter; for best flavour tomatoes need to ripen on the vine and stay out of the fridge - tomatoes in winter are invariably tasteless; coriander planted in the middle of summer will bolt - it's better planted in spring or autumn.

lunch and some stimulating debate.

We pondered how to make sense of all the conflicting advice consumers receive these days, the value of omega threes, and what it is processed foods actually do to your system.
I matched a menu to the topic, which was a Salad of Beets, Beans, Walnuts and Goats Cheese with Five Grain Country Loaf;Mediterranean Stuffed Salmon Fillets with Red Pepper Sauce and Flash Roasted Cherry Tomatoes and for dessert, Chocolate Fudge Pudding. We'll get you a link to the video as soon as we have it.
